A field guide to Nashville's visual art community

A city, a community, and the art I almost missed
A personal introduction to The Nashville Art Bulletin—and an invitation to show up curious.

Like many Nashville transplants I moved here to earn my degree and ended up loving the city and staying. Despite being here that long I managed to miss a very significant part of the city I was living in. I already knew Nashville was very creative, you literally can't live here and not know that. But when people talked about Nashville as a creative city, my mind, like many, went to the lively music scene here.
Visual art was different
I’ve always liked art. I took art classes in high school, but past that it was only a hobby. I wasn't completely unfamiliar with art. But the art world? Galleries, openings, artist talks, collectors, curators, residencies, studio visits? That was not my world. And I didn't know anyone who could help me with any introductions.
That distinction is part of why this exists. You can genuinely love art and still have no idea how to participate in the art community around you. For years, I didn't. Then I started looking, and Nashville got a lot bigger.

There is a lot happening here.
The first few events I found felt like little discoveries. Then there were more. And more. Eventually I realized the problem wasn't that Nashville didn't have the kind of visual art community I was looking for. The problem was that I had no idea how to find it.
There are artists working all over this city. There are galleries putting on exhibitions, universities bringing in speakers, museums programming events, artist-run spaces experimenting with things, markets full of makers, openings, receptions, crawls, workshops and small events that might never reach you unless you already follow the right person.
A lot of the information is there. It's just spread everywhere. And if you don't already know where to look, you can very easily assume there isn't much to find.
The Nashville Art Bulletin is about changing that.
This isn't about discovering Nashville's art scene. That wording matters to me.
The scene doesn't need to be “discovered.” It existed before this website, and there are artists, organizers, galleries, institutions and community members who have been doing this work for years. I'm the one discovering it.
The Bulletin is a way to document that process while making what I find more visible to other people who might also be standing on the outside wondering where to begin. I don't have some special connection that gets me into these spaces. I didn't come into this knowing everybody. There isn't an art-world family tree behind me. I'm starting where a lot of people start:
Interested enough to show up.
And I want showing up to feel normal. You don't need to know the artist. You don't need to understand every piece on the wall. You don't need to be buying anything. You don't need to know what you're supposed to wear to an opening. You can just be curious.

What you'll find here
At the beginning of each month, The Nashville Art Bulletin will publish a guide to what's happening across Nashville's visual art community.
Not just the biggest museum exhibition or the event everyone already knows about. I want to know what's happening at the galleries. What's happening at the universities. What independent artists are putting together. Which exhibitions are opening. Where people are gathering. Who is speaking. What is ending soon. What deserves a little more attention.
Then, throughout the month, we'll slow down.
Some things deserve more than a date on a calendar. There will be conversations with artists and people doing interesting work around Nashville. Visits to galleries and studios. Event coverage. Stories about spaces I think more people should know about. Questions I genuinely want answered. And probably plenty of moments where I'm learning something right alongside whoever is reading.
There will be journalism when there's a story to tell. But mostly, The Nashville Art Bulletin is here to document, connect and make people aware. To point and say, Hey, this is happening over here. And hopefully enough people start looking.

I want this to become bigger than my own perspective.
One person can't know everything happening in an entire city, and I don't want the Bulletin to pretend otherwise. As it grows, I want artists to send in their exhibitions. I want organizations to tell us what they're working on. I want people to send me something and say, You missed this.
Good. Tell me. I want to hear about the established gallery and the artist putting together their first show. The event with a marketing budget and the one being passed around through Instagram stories. The people who have been part of Nashville's arts community for twenty years and the person who walked into their first opening last week.
Because the more people participate, the more useful this becomes.
And maybe, eventually, someone who has lived in Nashville for years won't suddenly look around and think: Wait. Where did all of this come from? They'll already know.
This is Issue No. 01 of The Nashville Art Bulletin.
There’s a lot I haven't seen yet.
That’s exactly where I want to start.
